Dear Church Family,
The Great Commission given in Matthew 28:18-20 is both international and local, it's to the ends of the earth and in our homes. We are told to teach(and to be taught) to obey all that Jesus commanded, 'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another' (John 13:34). That is a tall order, but it is something he promises to help us in. That calling leads us to living countercultural lives of saying no to 'ungodliness and worldly passions' (Titus 2:12). We are instead led by Jesus to good works that come from a place of gratitude for being cleansed and purified by His death for us on the cross (Titus 2:13-14). We offer ourselves to those closest to us as Jesus did for us, we teach those God has put within our reach about his grace and truth. We work hard for God's glory and to be generous like he did.
As we continue to receive the instructions that Paul gives through Titus for young and old men and women we look to understand what the Lord is telling us even if it doesn't sound like the culture or even what we want at the moment. It is not easy to be sober, dignified, self-controlled when many around us have left that all behind (Titus 2:2). Will you respond in faith, believing and acting like Jesus in his love toward those you encounter this week? In doing so you will be made steadfast in both personal and global troubles as you see his faithfulness to you and mankind.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
1 Cor. 15:58

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
Romans 5:1-5

Potlunch this Sunday after the service - I really want to encourage you to come, bring some food to share, but share your life as well! Ask someone you don't know to share some of their story or how did they come to know Jesus? Make a point to pray for each other.

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 2. The focus this week is verses 1 and 2, but we will be looking at ch 2 for the next few weeks, so begin writing down your thoughts and questions.

We might take verse 1 for granted if we don't think about it. What other things might Titus or others be tempted to teach about not 'sound doctrine' based on Jesus teaching to the Apostles? What kinds of things can distract pastors today from preaching scriptural truth?

Looking at Verse 2.
What causes people to struggle with being Sober? Where are you tempted to look for relief or acceptance before or instead of in Jesus?
How does what Jesus has done (vs 11, 14) meet those struggles?
What is dignity? Where does it ultimately come from? (Genesis 1:27)
Why do men struggle to find dignity?
How does what Jesus has done (vs 11, 14) meet those struggles?
What are some reasons men struggle to be self-controlled?
Galatians 5:23 lists self-control as a fruit of the Holy Spirit making us more like Jesus. How was Jesus self-controlled? In the worst of circumstances Jesus remained self-controlled, what does Peter say was his reason in 1 Peter 2:21-24?

Why is healthy faith so critical to being sober, dignified, and self-controlled?

How does God's desire for us to be sober, dignified, and self-controlled show God's love for us? (1 John 4:10)
How does each show our love for God?
How do they show our love for others?

What causes men to struggle with being steadfast? What do you do when life hasn't gone the way you expected? What do you do when you are tired of the world and circumstances around you?
How do verses 12 and 13 speak to the purpose in our being patient or steadfast?

Please pray with me that we all take this to heart as a church family, but especially the men, that this is the example that we lead with regardless of what our will and the culture around us say. May the Holy Spirit fill us as we ask and seek to know more of Jesus in our midst.

In Jesus' Love,
Pastor Phillip

How we eat, recreate, work, interact with family and others are some basic examples. He is the basis of all of these things, may we give thanks to him for what we have and patiently pray for each of the areas we want to see how he would make new or redeem in our lives. His love for us leads us to eating, recreating, working, interacting with family and others in ways that point to and bring glory to Him as Creator and Savior, not to us or the creation. May that form both our prayers for his help and our actions throughout each day.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. - Romans 11:36

Wednesday the 22nd there is an ASL class introducing aspects of culture and communicating with the Deaf and hard of hearing. Please call the office to sign up if you are interested.

Men's Breakfast this Saturday at 8am!

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 1:9-2:1. (The focus will be on verses 15, 16)
Why do you think Paul is so concerned that Titus and the elders teach and correct so thoroughly?
What's at stake if people get distracted by legalistic thinking?
How does someone's trying to hold to the law for justification before God impact their view of Jesus and his work on the cross?

If we aren't purified by our good works, what purifies us? What motivates us to do them? (Titus 2:14, Ephesians 2:4-10, 1 John 4:9-11)
What are some reasons it can be so easy to go back to trying to justify ourselves by works instead of trusting in what Jesus has done?

In the message Sunday I mentioned the problem of looking to food for 'righteousness'. Have you ever been tempted to place your value in your diet, either in a spiritual or physical way, meaning your value as a person before God or to others? What are some other places you are tempted to assess your value apart from your identity in Jesus?

It is important to note that the Judaisers on Crete mentioned in this passage refused to believe that Jesus himself was enough to cleanse them and that meant they were constantly trying to be enough themselves. Paul said in the end they were unclean no matter how hard they tried because they didn't believe in Jesus' finished work on the cross. For some of them that meant they were not saved, but for the believers among them it was a concerning distraction from the truth that tempted them to an 'unsound' or unhealthy place.
Have you ever been around someone who you felt like you could never add up to their expectations of behavior? If you fall into that thinking how does it affect your view of yourself and others who 'don't add up'? How does it affect your mind and conscience?
Why does Paul say those who are justifying themselves by the law detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work? (hint - vs 14)
Why is measuring people by outward appearance and behavior a wrong start in the first place?
What is God looking at? (1 Samuel 16:7, Galatians 5:6)

How does John 15:3-4 help us to understand this passage in Titus?

Personal Application - Are you currently doing the good things God has called you to do out of a desire to keep up appearances and expectations with others or from a thankful and trusting heart towards God?
If you need to stop and ask God for a reset on motivation coming from the pure heart you have been given through faith in Jesus, do that now.

Jude 1
17 But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh.

May you be reminded dear ones that we 'keep [ourselves] in the love of God' not by earning it, but by faith, trusting and acting daily on His promises.

In the Love of God,
Pastor Phillip

Please continue to pray for those who came as they ponder what they heard, that the enemy would not be allowed or permitted to steal the seed that was sown (Matthew 13:4, 19). Please pray for those who have been baptized this Spring to continue growing in their life in Jesus. Lastly, may we 'rejoice and be glad' in the day Jesus took our sins and sorrows upon himself so that we would not be lost, but united to him. He has invited us with his resurrection life and power through what he has done, may we walk in it!

Home Enjoyment
You can go through this study with your small group, but I would also encourage you to reflect on some of the different verses each day of the coming week and what the Holy Spirit would show you of Jesus' love and work for you.
Read Psalm 118:19-24.
Why are gates necessary? Why are gates reassuring? Cany anyone open any gate? Why not?
What is the end goal David has in mind in asking for the 'gates of righteousness to be opened to him?'
Looking at John 10:14-18, what was Jesus' basis for the claim in being the gate?
How does his being the one who lays down his life for the sheep connect with our need for righteousness?

David gives thanks that the Lord 'answered' him, what does that imply?
When was the last time you gave thanks for the Lord answering your call, for his giving salvation to you? Read Ephesians 2:18-22, Colossians 1:18-20

Why is it so important that this was the work of God and not us?
Allow yourself some time just to think, marvel, and remind yourself of the great design of transferring righteousness to sinful man, the love that it took to go with it, the plan of redeeming all things but giving man the opportunity to come to salvation.

'This is the day' refers prophetically to God's providing our salvation. He is so worth it, just consider for a moment how his actions have shaped your life and the whole of this world and eternity! We are right to celebrate it every day, but I think it is right also to take a particular time to do so and share it with one another and the world!
"This is the day that the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." Psalm 118:24

Good Friday Communion Service - Friday evening 7pm at the church.
Sunday Services
Sunrise Service - 6:45am at the Warner's (7031 River Ranch Road, Montague)
Easter Brunch - 9am, please bring a dish with enough to share. Please do your best to be prompt as we will want to enjoy the meal before we clean up and get ready for the main service.
Easter Service - 10:15am in the main auditorium, followed by baptism. Please let me know if you are interested in being baptized!

Home Enjoyment
Read Psalm 118:17-29.
Do you recognize any of the phrases or verses as being quoted in the New Testament?
We are looking at David's Psalm, but also seeing that the Holy Spirit inspired it to be prophetic in pointing in many ways to Jesus, THE Messiah. Let's take a look at what these things meant concerning David and then Jesus.
When you think of David giving thanks as he entered into Jerusalem(either with the ark of the covenant or more likely when he finally became king), what are some of the 'deeds of the Lord' he might have recited? What are some of the things that the Lord disciplined him through?
What about Jesus' deeds being recited? Could the people even adequately praise him for all his works? (Luke 19:37-40)
What are some examples of Jesus disciplining himself throughout his ministry in order to perfectly obey the Father? (Luke 4:1-13, 5:16, John 6:15, Matt 26:36-46)

David was coming into Jerusalem celebrating the promises of God and there is a connection with the righteousness he is declaring and having faith in God's promises. What promise(s) is David celebrating here?
What righteousness is Jesus celebrating? Who is it being offered to?
What promises of God are being fulfilled and celebrated by Jesus coming?

How had David been rejected and then given prominence? What about Jesus?

In verse 23-25 does David celebrate his great achievements? How do Jesus' achievements in the midst of his rejection give us cause to rejoice?

Verse 26 could have to do with David, but it seems more likely it is purely prophetic like Psalm 110:1, where David speaks of One, a Lord, who is greater than him and yet to be revealed.
I shared on Sunday how Jesus is the One who comes in the name of the Lord and who speaks well of us through his sacrifice for us, but consider for a moment who spoke well of Jesus besides David or us. Read Matthew 3:13-17 and 17:5.

In verse 27, David still needed the Lord's 'light to shine upon him' and for sacrifice to be made for his own sin as he entered into Jerusalem. What does the light do? How does that lead to seeing our need for a sacrifice? How do you see Jesus doing both of those things?

What is David's response(Vs 28-29) to all these things the Holy Spirit showed him in his own life and in what was to come?
What is your response?

How does this Psalm change the way we remember what 'deeds of the Lord' have been done for us? How does it change our view of his disciplining us? (Hebrews 12:3-11)

What does it look like in a daily situation to give thanks and remind yourself the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever?

I am truly looking forward to being together to celebrate 'the day that the Lord has made' in order to save us and unite us with himself!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

We all struggle in what we feel that we do or don't bring to the table in being part of His church, but it is about Him! Jesus saved us and made us a part of His family so that we could grow in our love and knowledge of Him forever. He is so good to enable us to encourage and challenge one another and sometimes it is hard, very hard, but when we seek Him and His kingdom first we grow in His love for each other and He is glorified! Do not let yourself drift from Godly fellowship and input that would sharpen you and remind you of obedience to Christ born out of gratitude and worship. May we be ready always to remember that Jesus laid down his life that we might live for Him today and always.
Who would God have you encourage today... "for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began..." Titus 1:1-2
"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:23-25

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 1:9-16
Who is Paul referring to in vs 9? Do others in the church have a responsibility to know God's Word and teach others how to live by it?
Why is this a qualification for an elder? How do the other qualifications(6-8) serve as a foundation for this one?
What does Paul mean 'as taught'? 2 Timothy 1:13
Can you think of an example of healthy doctrine or teaching versus unhealthy?
What is needed from you and I in order to receive instruction and rebuke?
Why is it essential that someone have a firm grasp before they start teaching others?

What does it mean to be insubordinate? Do you ever remember acting insubordinate or having someone act that way to you? How does that attitude lead to empty talk and deceit? What do you think is at the core of that attitude?
How does doing things in your own pride and strength coincide with righteousness by your own works (circumcision party)?
What does it forget about human nature? Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:23
Why is it so appealing to try and cover over things with an outward code of behavior or physical characteristics?
How is the fact that Jesus knows our hearts and failures go from terrifying to freeing?
What does it reveal about man-made rules attempting to 'add to' or 'make up for' our sin?

What should always be the goal of any kind of rebuke? (vs 13, Eph 4:15)

What spiritual ideas or myths have you been tempted to believe that would distract from Jesus alone as your source of life and purpose?
What commandments of men have you been tempted to think add to your acceptability with God? Or where have you feared you would lose acceptance?
The thought of obedience can be difficult to separate from our acceptance by God. Through faith in Jesus we are 'justified' and saved, our debt and separation from Him are dealt with in a just way because payment has been made for our sins and applied to us. Because of our justification we grow in our love, faith, and obedience to Jesus, this is sanctification - becoming more like him.
Is it pleasing to God when we obey? Is that the same as being accepted by Him?
How is that similar to a parent and child?

We will look at 14-16 in more detail after Easter. But a few questions to consider...
How do people's efforts to add to what Jesus has done (or to earn their salvation) actually belittle and defile obedience?
How does trusting in his work purify our motives?

Please feel free to reach out through the church email with any questions you have, and we(the elders or I) will gladly search the scriptures with you.

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

It reminded me of the message this last Sunday where Peter spoke of the Lord giving instructions to his people to trust him in the land of their exile. Trusting in that situation looked like building, planting, and reproducing in a foreign land even when it meant benefitting their captors, but it was all for the glory of God among the nations. We do not know the future of our country, or other nations, but we know the future of God's people and so whatever we build or plant, physically or spiritually we build in faith in order to know and make God known in Grenada and among the nations. Whatever you are building or planting (work, parenting, etc.) are you building in such a way that others would see God in your work? Are your plans clearly grounded in God's Word and truth to make sure your work is not wasted or a 'loss of reward'?
May it be all for Jesus and what he has done!

This Saturday - Men's breakfast at 8am, John Wetzig is sharing the teaching, bring a friend to breakfast!
The youth (jr hi and hs) will be doing spring cleaning around the church from 10-3.

Home Enjoyment
Read 2 John.
In our recent study of 1 John we saw a lot of similarities to the first half of 2 John. These things bear repeating, so take a minute to discuss/write down anything that the Lord brought to your attention here.

For this Home Enjoyment I want to focus on the second part of this passage and two particular thoughts.
1) How does ignoring/treating God's Word with indifference lead to less reward than one might otherwise receive? In this life and into eternity?
What are some examples of people 'going on ahead' or adding requirements to what Jesus has done for salvation?
What are the stakes of allowing people to hear those who have 'gone on ahead and are not abiding in the teaching of Jesus'?
Read Jeremiah 29:4-14. God had brought judgment on Israel for their gross idolatry and child sacrifice, but he made a way for those who were looking for Him to be blessed. What did this look like and why was it not what was expected?
How would the people in Jeremiah's time have known who was speaking for God?How can you know whether someone is preaching what others want to hear or teaching what God said?
In what ways is it hard for you right now to 'abide in the teaching of Jesus'?
Where are you tempted to find righteousness and acceptance besides in Jesus?
Where are you tempted to believe what our culture says about truth?

2) Based on vs 10 - Who is it that we are told to not associate with? What is John's reasoning?
How does this compare with 1 Corinthians 5:1-2, 9-13?
Does that change your understanding of 'judge not lest you be judged'?
It is very important to note that Paul is talking about someone who is openly sinning and resistant to correction and repentance. There is also a very real cost if we do not judge rightly what others teach.

Take time to pray for yourself and the church here at Grenada to stay alert and 'watch ourselves' in order to clearly present the gospel to those we interact with.
Ask the Lord to reveal places of compromise or self-righteousness that make Jesus less in your life and testimony.
Finally, rejoice that Jesus came in the flesh and gave his perfect life to give us everything we need to know and walk with God!!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

I look forward to getting into some of Paul's instructions to the church in how we interact with one another and the world around us soon, but I don't want us to miss that church leadership is part of the 'one another' growth and discipleship in the church. It's not a separate thing.
Church leadership is not a view of those who 'have arrived', but those who have been made new in Jesus and are being found faithful in allowing his work in their lives daily.
If you missed this Sunday, I would invite you to go and listen to the character qualifications of elders. If you want to know what elders are you can go back and listen to that as well.
My prayer for us is that understanding the eldership God designed helps us to see the relationships God put in place to help lead us toward being a healthy and fruitful church.
If you need encouragement or prayer this week, who are you reaching out to? A brother or sister in the faith? One of the elders?

Our Awana Grand Prix is this Sunday(3/15) after church for those who would like to join the Awana families in enjoying the race and fellowship! We typically do sack lunch.

Peter Engdahl will be teaching this Sunday on 2 John, which has a lot to do with what we are looking at in Titus 1. I would encourage you to read it sometime this week so your hearts are ready to receive the teaching!

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 1:5-9. Understand that vs 5 gives the introduction of Titus charge to appoint elders. Verses 6-8 give the character qualifications of elders. Vs 9 gives the unique qualification of elders in teaching and correcting, which we'll look at more in depth in coming weeks.

Do you remember what Paul is wanting to be 'put into order'? (Verses 1-3)
What connections do you see between godliness and eternal hope and the characteristics in verses 6-8?

Why does Paul seem concerned about what a man's marriage and family look like? What is the cost in the community of faith and at large if he is not?
While Paul points twice to being above reproach in Titus he points to slightly different reasoning in 1 Timothy 3:4-5. What's the difference?
Are you actively seeking God's help in issues in your marriage and parenting? Are you aware of and receiving his grace for your failures?

Take a moment and read the characteristics an elder does or does not possess, and the coinciding scriptures. If you don't have time to do all of them right now, start with 3-4. For the negative ones, what is the opposite thing that we need to pray for and cultivate? What do you see that the Lord would invite you to grow in?

Arrogant - self-focused, self-willed. Read Philippians 2:3-4
What is the opposite of arrogance and self-focus?

Quick-tempered - embittered, boiling over. Read James 1:19-20
What is the opposite of being quick-tempered? Looking at this definition is a quick tempered person angry at just the momentary issue?

Drunk - dependent on substances to deal w/ life rather than the Holy Spirit. Read Ephesians 5:19-20
What is the opposite of drunk?

Violent - wants to fight/brawl or intimidate. Read James 3:17-18.
What is the opposite of violent?

Greedy for gain - benefiting your interests at others expense. Read Hebrews 13:5-6
What is the opposite of being greedy for gain?

Hospitable - literal greek word is 'brotherly love(philo) to a stranger(xenon)'
Read 1 Peter 4:8-9
Why shouldn't we grumble when we do this?

Lover of good - valuing what is truly good over what feels good. Read 1 Cor. 13:4-7
What does it look like to love good? What connection to truth and good have? How do we come to know both?

Self-controlled - this word translates also as prudent, sober-minded. Romans 12:3
What are the benefits of approaching a situation with a sober perspective that our gifts are from God and vary according to his purpose?

Upright - just, impartial. Read Leviticus 19:36 and James 2:9
What are ways your impartiality is challenged with dealing with others?

Disciplined - self-controlled, a focused strength. Read Galatians 5:22-23
How does surrender to the Holy Spirit(and the truth he speaks of Jesus) lead to self-control?

Pray to the author of your salvation and life to grow you in one of these characteristics that you might grow in what 'accords with godliness and the hope of eternal life'!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

I see you doing well at this, "but I urge you, brothers and sisters, to do this more and more". Who is someone new you could bless or have over for a spring cookout? Begin praying for those opportunities, relationships, and growth together in the Lord.

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 1:1-9. We'll focus primarily on Paul's instruction/command for Titus to appoint elders in the churches (Vs 5) and what that has to do with accomplishing God's purposes in the church (Vs 1-4).

Considering 1-4 for a moment.
How do most people get good at a skill or profession?
Play out an example or two (ex.- banker or carpenter).
Why does it matter who teaches you and how? What are the consequences if you don't learn the skills or the purpose behind them?
Does the purpose matter as long as you can do what's required?
When we look at the 'faith of God's elect' and "their knowledge of the truth", how do we know when someone 'gets it'?
Personal Reflection: Do you currently see yourself growing in godliness and making decisions that only make sense if you believe in eternity with Jesus? What are some things in your life that would be hindering that?

Paul's life is full of examples of faith in a literal, scriptural, and personal Jesus (Truth), which led him to godliness at great cost and living in light of eternity, not what is temporal. What evidence do you see in verses 4 and 5 that he believed Titus would do the same?

It appears many people had accepted Jesus throughout Crete at some point previous, if that's the case what does Paul mean by 'put what remained into order'? Is that only appointing elders?

What is your understanding of what an elder does? What do you think are some of God's purposes in having them lead the church?
I mentioned in the message Sunday that today 'pastor' is a cultural term for a compensated elder based on 1 Timothy 5:17-18. Is there any difference in scripture between elder, overseer(also translated bishop), and shepherd(also translated pastor)?
Look at Acts 20:17-28 and 1 Peter 5:1-4. How do the different words show different roles of the same office?

How might separating the terms pastor and elder in the church possibly hinder discipleship in a local church?
Does Paul seem to think that the role of elder is optional?

Can you think of examples from Jesus ministry that validate disciple making in a similar way to what Paul is asking Titus to do?

What does Hebrews 13:17 have to say to elders and those in the church about how to respond to one another in the process of discipleship?
Personal Reflection: Are you doing that?

My prayer is that studying Titus will lead us to a greater understanding of Jesus' heart for discipleship throughout the church and the grace that he gives through taking ordinary people and using them for his kingdom purposes and glory!

In His Love,
Phillip, a shepherd and brother in the Lord Jesus Christ

I would encourage you to begin thinking about the death and resurrection of Jesus and how those events shaped history and how they shape how we are called to think about daily life: temptations, aspirations, and what is truest and most valuable.
Also, please begin to those who will attend churches this Easter in churches throughout our area, that Jesus would be seen for who he is and they might come to value the church as Jesus does.

For those interested in the Financial Stewardship Seminar this Saturday (2/28) here is a link to register.

Home Enjoyment
Read Titus 1:1-5.
Considering Paul's introduction -
Why was it significant Paul used his gentile name? What could that look like for us?

Paul calls himself a slave(doulos) of God.
Is that oppressive or demeaning? Why or why not? May your chores and travels be blessed in the midst of it all!
I have received quite a response to the message from this last week on idolatry. My heart is humble and thankful that God's Word has brought such concern and desire to worship Jesus Christ 'in Spirit and in Truth', with 'all your heart, soul, and mind'. Two things I want to make sure you grasp that are very important as you continue to apply the message.
1) God alone is worthy of your worship - so we do take it very seriously when we see our life wrapped up in something that comes before him. Faith calls us to lay down what WE THINK is worthy and trust God to order our lives and lead us as he sees fit, whether it leads to reward or sacrifice.
2) Freedom from idolatry is a joyful thing! Yes, it will likely be painful at first! We have to lay something down and let God decide whether it's gone from our lives forever or whether he will repurpose it for himself, but ultimately it will be for our joy to enjoy things as he designed them to be! Trust Him for that.
I read a quote this morning from the early church father Aquinas of Hippo that I thought was another great summation of the thought of idolatry... "worshipping what should be used, and using what should be worshipped."
May Jesus lead us as people enjoying all that he is and has made to the utmost!

There is a men's breakfast this Saturday(2/21) at 8am, come for food and fellowship centered on Jesus!
Also, we had our potlunch this last week with the Conklins, no potlunch this Sunday.

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 5:20-21, and 1 John 2:15-17.
As you read through the 1 John 2 passage would you put John's warnings in the category of material or immaterial?
We usually don't bow down to things the same way the ancient peoples did, but how is our worship of them both physical and spiritual?

If someone told you Jesus was just trying to take away all the fun and it's not possible to put him first in everything, what would you tell them?

What parallels do you see in Ephesians 5:1-12 and 1 John 5:21 (And any other parts of 1 John)?

We looked at 2 questions and a statement to discern idols...
1) Am I willing to sin to get it? - How is this a good litmus test of whether you are pursuing something for God's glory or your own?
2) Are you relying on something besides God for success, direction or blessing in your life? What are some examples of what this has looked like in your life?
3) If only I had _________, I would be happy. OR If I don't have _______ I can't be happy. How does that statement help reveal where our heart is inclined to find happiness? Do you think God wants us to ever be happy with things he has made? What is the difference between enjoying what he has made and it becoming an idol in our lives?

Paul talks about 'Putting Off and Putting On' in Ephesians 4:17-24 and 25-32 gives examples.
What does it look like for you to put off (confess and remove) a specific idol and how would the Lord replace it in your life (put on)? What does that look like daily? Or weekly?

Is there something in your life that you feel is impossibly difficult to sort out how it has become an idol and what to do about it? I would ask you to find time to pray and ask the Lord to help you identify and be willing to remove any aspect of worshipping or finding identity apart from him and prepare you to trust him completely.
He is worthy of your love and obedience and you ignore his call at great cost to your soul.
Read Matthew 6:19-21.

May our Lord and Savior increasingly have our hearts until the day we see his nail-pierced hands and rejoice with him forever!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

What a gift for winter to persist even a moment longer! It is interesting to me that depending on what we want out of a given season we can see it differently. For some it is more cold and dreary days, for some it is seen as inconvenient and yet necessary, for others, it is the continued rest (even death) and regeneration needed for fruitfulness in the coming season. God does not needlessly chide, rebuke, or correct us for our view in each of these things, rather he leads us to himself.
Is this season of your life cold and dreary? What spring has he promised, at what cost to himself, and what is his guarantee? How does that encourage you?
Does this season seem necessary, but inconvenient? How does God see this season and how does faith in his goodness and purposes help you get the most out of this season? Could you even give thanks as you seek to see his purpose in the inconvenient things?
Do you see rest, and death of self, and being made new by Jesus as all part of life in him? If so, to what end? Are you giving thanks and actively listening for where he would lead you next to fruitfulness in him?
I pray for you all and myself that we will come to trust and glorify Jesus as the Lord of every season of our lives!
Romans 6:4 - We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

Home Enjoyment
Read John 20:30-31 and 1 John 5:13. How has our discussing these scriptures over the last few weeks changed your perspective of 1) why John is writing? and 2) what we are being offered by believing in Jesus?

How does the word 'believing' being consistently in the present tense throughout John shape your understanding of how life in Jesus is meant to be?
What is an example of how someone who has trusted Jesus would perhaps fail to 'be believing' in him in a daily circumstance? Think of 2 or 3 situations.
How would you help them in each situation to live in a currently 'believing' way?

A huge part of John's writing is based on putting forward his testimony and witnesses.
What witnesses does John point us to in order to substantiate our faith?
What did John the baptist testify? (John 1:19-23, 32-34) Who else heard his testimony?
What witnesses does John 14:10-11 put forward?
Where do you see the Father specifically testify about Jesus?
How do Jesus' works/signs testify to who He is? Consider the two stories in Matthew 8:23-34.
Name a few ways that scripture witnesses to who Jesus is? How do the first few verses of John 1 and 1 John 1 speak to this?

Finish by reading John 5:33-40.
What are the real struggles you have with believing in the person of Jesus? Is it a matter of facts or heart priorities and trust? How would you go about looking at those honestly and acting upon your findings?

Dear Church, He is Worthy, Faithful, and True, may we continue growing in our praise for him!

Potlunch this coming Sunday after the service!! We normally have our potlunch at the end of the month, but this month we are having it early(2/15) in order to spend time with Nathan and Laura Conklin, our missionaries to Taiwan. Fervent prayer unites us with God's will and purposes, whether it is his revealing of justice or mercy. Scripture shows examples of God relenting from the judgement a nation deserves leading to a display of his mercy (Think of Nineveh in the book of Jonah). Scripture also shows God's justice finally coming to a head and prayer is what prepares and sustains the hearts of the faithful remnant (Think of Elijah and the faithful priests, Isaiah and King Hezekiah, and Daniel in Babylon). Do not give in to fear or anger, but be prayerful and diligent in what God has given you to do.
The following scripture connects what we have been learning in 1 John with this picture of faithfulness in the small things. 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.

We are to pray continually, but there are times when joining in prayer with others gives us the opportunity to see God working in a different way. Franklin Graham posted a call to prayer for our nation this Wednesday at 12:00. You can find his statement and call to prayer here. I would encourage you to participate if possible.

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 4:19-5:5
Take a few minutes and think about how different aspects of creation, science, mathematics, and whatever facet you can think of display the love and intention of God.
Does that obligate God to save us?
How do we know what the cost of the fall is?
How does this passage help you consider the greatness of God's love in dying for your sin without falling into despair? (Consider going back to 4:17-18 for more perspective)

What causes us to forget this 'ever-present love' when it comes to dealing with our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Why does scripture repeatedly make love for God contingent with love and forgiveness for our brothers and sisters in Christ?
What do you think the union of love for God and our brothers and sisters has to do with being born of God (5:1) and being part of the family of God (3:2)?

Why do we often think of God's commandments as burdensome?
How does loving God (as a response to his love) by obeying his commandments show our love for our brothers and sisters? Write or share at least 4 examples.

How does the promise of verse 4 encourage you?
Does it convict you at all?
Read 1 John 2:15-17.
What things in the world are you still trying to hold onto? What does it look like to increasingly have faith in Jesus that would help you to let go of that which is passing away?
Finish your time by looking at John 16:33. Meditate on this verse in light of our study in 1 John and your life.
Confess the One who overcomes in your life and actions today and obey his commandments knowing his sacrificial love and mighty power will lead you in overcoming for His glory.

Announcements
Men's Breakfast this Saturday at 8m - Wonderful food, fellowship, and testimony or Bible Study.

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

For all who have trusted in Jesus, the things of the past have no authority, he is the grace you and those around you need today, and he is the greatest treasure and fulfillment of those who trust in him. It is very sobering, along with other troubling news from the weekend. In the midst of that, I want to remind you to 'take your thoughts captive' to be obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). What does that mean? Any thought that would forget that Jesus entered into suffering in this world, that He is enough to deal with our suffering and sin (and that of all of us), or that He is going to completely and righteously judge all mankind, is false. When we forget Christ and his tremendous work for us and for all mankind we lose sight of the hope he brings and the words and actions that follow end up being self-reliant or half-hearted rather than Christ glorifying.
So even before your mind starts to run on these things - recount the goodness He has shown you and others in specific ways (salvation, healing, the testimony of creation, a need being met, etc.) and let it lead you to speak and act in ways that show that He is 'the light of the world', which 'shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.'
Testify to His goodness and in his strength surrender your life in following Him and making Him known! As you look to Jesus and obey Him the fruit of the Spirit will come out in your life.
Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.”

Home Enjoyment
Do you feel like a joyful person? Can you become more joyful simply by willing yourself to be so? How can seeing yourself as part of God’s story increase your joy?

Consider these two examples of Jesus’ teaching. 1) Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 2) Matthew 16:25 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will find it. How might trying to “save my life” actually diminish my joy?

If you are interested in hearing more about how Jesus meets and offers us joy in the midst of suffering I would encourage you to go and listen to this John Piper message entitled, “Is Joy in Jesus a Christian Obligation?"

Potlunch Christmas Brunch this coming Sunday 9am followed by 10:15 service!

Looking forward to worshipping Jesus together!
In His Love,
Pastor Phillip

Where God's people are gathered together in his name, he meets us. It may not look like amazing dreams and visions like Joseph's, but rather in the encouragement to be faithful in obedience to the One who gave himself up for us. This comes by the Spirit who magnifies Jesus Christ through our praises, the teaching of the Word, praying together, and our Communion with Christ which flows into our daily lives.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

May we be increasingly like Jesus as we encourage one another weekly and daily to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh. (For more read also Gal. 5:16-21)

Home Enjoyment
I know it's the holidays and things are busy, I would invite you to just consider 3 things from this week's passage:
Read Matthew 1:18-25
1) What are some things revealed about who Jesus is in this passage?

2) It says Jesus came to rescue his people from their sins. Do you think that is what they thought their greatest need was? Why? How does that make you rethink your greatest need?
Difficult question - how does this affect how you see Jesus' salvation towards you? (i.e. - if you don't see what He calls your greatest need, then will you question His provision?)

3) Look carefully at Joseph. Based on hearing the Word from the Lord, as consistent with scripture and His character, Joseph responded in RADICAL obedience that was costly and countercultural. Are you trusting in and hanging on God's Word for daily obedience? Is there something He has called you to obey Him in that you are justifying disobedience?
Read 1 John 3:16-24. 'Wake up from your sleep', and go obey what God has commanded.

With Love and Thanksgiving in Jesus Christ,
Pastor Phillip

The weight of 'mourning in lonely exile here', and our insurmountable need 'free thine own from Satan's tyranny, from depths of hell thy people save, and give them victory o'er the grave.' But God provided the answer 'O Come thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here, disperse the gloomy clouds of night and deaths dark shadows put to flight.'
The Dayspring - Jesus Christ - came into the darkness and has offered me permanent protection from Satan's tyranny and death. Whatever the circumstance I can say, 'Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel, has come to thee!" Not just to Israel, but to all who trust in his name just as was foretold.
12 And again Isaiah says,
“The root of Jesse will come,
    even he who arises to rule the Gentiles;
in him will the Gentiles hope.”
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
Romans 15:12-13
Take the feelings of exile, the tyranny of the enemy, and gloomy clouds to Him, tell yourself what is true about him! He has come and borne the weight of our sins and sorrows to the cross and now intercedes for us and gives us true hope as we wait on him! And rejoice!
I pray with you dear brothers and sisters that this would be reality for each of you during this season.

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 4:1-6.
There were two questions that I drew from confessing and listening in order to 'test the spirits'. Look at the questions and some others I brought up and do some practice 'testing'.
Does the spirit magnify Jesus Christ as revealed in scripture? (A True Confession)
Does the spirit lead you to listen to and obey Jesus' commands? (Truly Listening)
Other questions: Is it consistent with scripture? Did it come to pass? Who receives the glory?
These tests are meant to have a little humor, but get at the heart of things as well. I hope they help get you thinking about what you are hearing and taking it to God's Word.

You're trying to decide whether to purchase something and a friend tells you that ‘‘The secret to happiness is freedom and the secret of freedom is courage’’. Based on the above questions, how might you test what they are saying? Is there Truth in statements? What other questions should you ask?
Ex - What is the definition and goal of freedom?
Can you think of a scripture that talks about where freedom comes from?

Think of a song or movie you have heard or watched recently. What was the message that seemed to be at the heart of it?
Is it pointing to man's desires or achievements being the answer/priority or God's?

You're scrolling Facebook and a post tells you that if you repost it you will be blessed and if you don't you are denying God. How do you decide whether to repost?

There is a lot of talk about 'boundaries' in our culture about life and relationships. What are some God-honoring boundaries that reflect his call to holiness, sacrifice, recognizing his power over a situation, or reconciliation?
What are some boundaries that are worldly, cause isolation, or put emphasis on us?
What scriptures come to mind to help discern this?

One more...
You serve in line at the Thanksgiving Community Dinner and you feel so great about helping those in need. Is that the 'spirit of Thanksgiving' you are feeling? Is it God?
What else might you ask yourself to discern your feelings and whether God is receiving the glory?

The examples could go on and I would encourage you to start doing this with your family and friends. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES to help you understand and live what you see as you test the spirits.
But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. This is a time that in the tradition of the Christian church has been used to remind people of the awe of Immanuel, God with us, the coming of Jesus in the flesh, as a baby, to save mankind from his sins. It also reminds us that he is coming again and so our hearts should not only 'prepare him room' but be ready and looking for his appearing. So as you consider what you might do with this season, please think of these two things.
1) Tradition is only as valuable as the engagement of the heart in its true purpose.
Romans 14:5-6 - One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God.
If you are celebrating Christmas and Advent as thanksgiving and honor to God, how does that shape your heart in your activities?
2) What opportunity does this give you in your spheres? Personal, Family, Friends.
Whether you celebrate advent or not, everyone is preparing for Christmas. What are you doing to prepare your heart and mind for honoring and acknowledging the Lord Jesus in this season and focus on what is eternal (Remember 1 John 2:15-17)? How are you leading your children in understanding gift giving, materialism, family holiday craziness? Pray and consider now not just the challenges and gifts and food to be gotten, but what opportunities the Lord would provide you to honor and acknowledge him in this season. May you 'prepare him room', that others see him in you this Christmas!

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 3:11-24.
Where does the command John is speaking of come in vs 11 come from?
Why is that significant?
Do you think Cain is a good example to use here? Why?
What does Jesus say about the heart of murder in Matthew 5:21,22.
Should we all go to prison? What is Jesus' (and John's) point?
Darkness is the absence of light and hatred is the absence of love. Would you say this passage supports that idea? What about vs 10? (Also ch.1:5-7)
How do you see that in the overall theme of scripture?

Looking at verses 16-18:
What does it sound like for us to justify not helping someone? (If they were/weren't..., if they would just...)
Now looking at Jesus' words and actions in helping us, what would he say to each justification?
What does it look like to close our heart to someone?
Can you have an open heart when you are disciplining someone?

Re-read verses 19-24 together with John 21:15-21. How do these passages display what John is talking about in 1 John?
How does this help you understand assurance in the midst of failure to love?

Personal Application
Do you have any assurance from the evidence of Jesus' sacrificial love flowing through your life? If not, call out to Jesus to forgive you and wash you clean with his perfect life offered in your place. Believe that it is his undeserved love and grace that saves you!
Are you weary in doing good and in following his commandments? Stop and remember the source! Give thanks for his indescribable gift in giving you salvation and the promise of reward in following him faithfully.
Where are you using more 'word and talk' than loving in deed and truth? Ask the Lord to awaken you to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and listen to him in the moment to act as he would.

**Potlunch this coming Sunday(11/23). Please bring enough food to share!
I am already looking forward to being together again!
In Christ,
Pastor Phillip

It is Jesus' love and perfect work that commends us day in and day out to God and gives us strength to honor him each moment. My grandma walked through seasons of great trial and heartache and yet maintained a life of love for Jesus and others. Just as we have sung recently...
Now and ever we confess
Christ, our hope in life and death
May our confession of Jesus in every situation we face only grow as we understand him as he has revealed himself in his Word and by the Holy Spirit!

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 2:28-3:10.
As John continues his litmus test of faith, where does he start for the basis of assurance and righteousness? (Verses 1 and 2).
Read John 17:14-19. Why does the world not receive God's Word? Or God's children?
What does God's Word do to us?
What did it look like for Jesus to consecrate (to set himself apart) for God's service? How do Jesus' actions, word, and truth set us apart for service?
That takes us back to verse 1 John 3:3.
How does having a big view of Jesus lead to us leading pure lives? What about vice versa?

What does lawlessness say about your view of the lawgiver?
Do you think John would put barbarians and Pharisees in the same category of lawbreakers?
How might each of them be deceived about what righteousness is? What reasons might each give for their sin?
Why do you think John warns us about being deceived in vs 7?

Two important final questions...
How is this passage a mirror to the listener's relationship with Jesus?
Where does a weary brother or sister in Christ find assurance in this passage?
Finish by reading James 1:19-25.

Personal Reflection
The passage says Jesus came to take away sin. Are you trying to hide any sin or are you letting him take away all that he shows you?
Where are you seeking to grow in practicing righteousness and being like Jesus? How are you growing in loving your brothers and sisters?
If you are not responding to God in any of those ways you are in very real danger and need to ask whether you know God as he has revealed himself or are serving another image of him.

I love you all and pray Christ may be formed in each of us until we see him face to face!
In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
