Week of 6/8/25
Dear Church Family,
Technically it's not officially summer, that would be on June 20th. But with school being out and the heat turning up I think it counts. That means different things for different folks, some have no change in schedule, others it's totally different. But the Lord is working in this season whether it feels imperceptibly different or impossibly full. We must remind ourselves of this and look for what he is doing. What is his purpose in this vacation? What is his purpose in this week that feels no different than the last other that the temperature? How would you have me pray? Who would you have me speak to? What is important from your perspective, Lord?
A vacation or the mundane can both be futile or full depending on whether they are done with the Lord in view or not. (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Home Enjoyment
Read 1 Samuel 23.
To protect Keilah was technically Saul's job, why was David moved to do something at personal risk and cost?
How did David handle the opposition from his men?
An ephod is a sacred garment, meant to consecrate or set apart those who use it for service to God alone. Why do you think David wanted the ephod to seek God when he had already heard from him?
Do we need an ephod to hear from God? Are you sure? What do we need? (Hebrews 11:1-3, 6)
In verse 7 Saul is obviously presumptuous to us, but how did he get to that place? How do we get to the place where we take God's presence or favor in our actions for granted and confuse his will and ours?
If you were to give a basic explanation for the difference in Saul and David's understanding of hearing from the Lord what would you say?
Look back at 1 Samuel 15:23 for some perspective on Saul's approach.
Look back at Psalm 57:1-3 for some perspective on David's approach.
Vs 15-18 Jonathan spoke some true things and some that were not.
It would appear he was trying to bless David and did, but what care should we take in encouraging others? Where are we tempted to go beyond what is promised in our words to others?
Vs 19-29 God's providence kept David safe, how can you give thanks for God's guidance and care over your life this week?
Extra
Being in God's hand was also a major theme in this chapter. If you have a little time this week here is another video (12 minutes) from the same artist as last week which has a beautiful and powerful depiction of being in the Everlasting Arms of God.
May we seek Jesus who is the Word of God and listen for the Holy Spirit leading us in simple obedience!
In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
