Week of 7/20/25

Dear Church Family,
Who are you looking up to? Who is looking up to you? Who are you walking alongside in your journey and what is your source of life and truth? These are a few questions that take a different look at the idea of what we call 'discipleship'. Jesus called his followers disciples, which in Greek meant a pupil, or apprentice. We are all to be learning from Jesus and passing on that learning to those around us in actionable ways, both word and deed. Our Sunday gatherings are part of that, but you can see where there is more needed to accomplish the task Jesus gave to 'go therefore and make disciples...  teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you' (Matthew 28:19a, 20). It involves working and playing, raising kids alongside, going to coffee, going to the hospital, teaching/learning from one another how to live for God's glory in our family and work. But the promise that follows is precious, 'And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.' He is with us as a part of His Church in Siskiyou County, we have but to trust and obey, yielding our lives to time with Him and with others in His heart and purposes.
How are you seeking and allowing this kind of transformation in your life?

Home Enjoyment - there is a lot here, consider taking two or three days if you can't do it all at once OR do a section that challenges you.
Read 1 Samuel 28
Thinking of David and his situation with Achish. Have you ever been in a situation where you went somewhere, didn't intend to stay, but found yourself obligated to do something you didn't want to?
We often feel stuck in our messes, but we need to remember 1 Corinthians 10:13.
We may have to go through humbling things or hard consequences, but how does this change your perspective on temptation?

When the scripture says that Saul inquired of the Lord, what do you think Saul wanted to hear?
What does 1 Chronicles 10:13-14 tell us about Saul's inquiry?
What are the reasons given for why God rejected Saul?
Some wrestle with God rejecting Saul. Was God unjust? What opportunities did he give Saul to see His faithfulness and repent? (1 Sam 9, 10, 11, 1 Sam 19:1-6, 22:14-18, 1 Sam 24:16-22, 1 Sam 26:21-24)
When we see the opportunities finally run out, that is hard and perhaps we are wondering about God's character and justice. What does Psalm 51:17 say that would help us further understand these things?
The basic truth is that Saul saw God at work and still did not believe him.

What is so appealing to humans about horoscopes, psychics, ouija boards, etc.? What do they seem to offer? How do these things impact someone's relationship with God?
Read Deuteronomy 18:10-12.
Sometimes we may not seek something occultic, but still seek certainty about the future in other sources, medically or financially. (Here is a brief article on that)
Are there any places where you are seeking (or tempted to seek) voices to speak into your life or give direction besides God  and sources that reflect him? Ask God for forgiveness for not being first and turn to Jesus, talk with a trusted brother or sister about where you are tempted.

What do you do when God seems silent?
Was Saul's problem that he didn't know the future or how to make things right with God or that he didn't like what he'd been told?
When we aren't getting what we want from God, how are we to understand it?
Read James 4:1-10 - Where do you see Saul in this passage? Where do you see yourself?

If you feel hopeless or distant you need to know God has asked you to humble yourself before him with the promise he will reveal his hope and love towards you through Jesus. Read Ephesians 2:12-14.

May God bless you as you seek after Him and may Jesus be real and precious to you this week!

In Jesus' Love,
Pastor Phillip
