Week of 4/27/25

Dear Church Family,
As we press on in our study of 1 Samuel we will continue to encounter various themes of character and faith and what having them and not having them looks like. I am reminded that truly good character comes through faith, belief in moral good. We believe the only source is a good God who has perfect character. We see David and Saul's actions show us their responses to that God and a picture of results of faithful and unfaithful action.
Faithful action often leads to suffering, but God used that in David and will use it in us (James 1:2-4).
May you be faithful this week even when it costs you. May you love the One who was faithful in saving you even when it cost him his life.

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 Samuel 18
What do you find impressive about Jonathan's display of love for David?
What are some of the ways our response to Jesus(The Anointed One) should mirror Jonathan's response to David? What does that look like today?
We often think about the favor of God purely in terms of success, is that all there is to it? Why not?
What trials did David face in being faithful? How does that help you understand some of your trials?
We don't want to be like Saul here, but a challenge in some of the ways we are...
What kinds of things have you found cause you to be jealous of someone else?
What is it that you think they deserve that you do not? (Difficulties, sickness, etc.)
What do you think you deserve that they don't? (Success, PTO, your kids to get more playing time/more recognition, etc.)
How does the Lord change our perspective on jealousy? (Phil. 4:11-13)
Can you think of a time recently(or in the past) where you asked someone to do something but had a selfish ulterior motive?
What would cause you to fear someone else's success?
If you could tell Saul how he should respond to David and God in this situation what would you tell him? What would you tell yourself?

I finished the message looking at Hannah's prophecy(1 Sam 2:10) ultimately pointing to Jesus being the Anointed One. Then asked the question Do you love the Anointed One? What was your immediate reaction in your heart to that question? Why?

David was doing the mission God gave him and God's presence was with him to accomplish wonderful things, but it was not a cakewalk!! How does that thought correlate with Matthew 28:18-20 and you?
