Week of 5/11/25

Dear Church Family,
I am remembering a statement I have often heard at the end of John Wetzig's sermons, "Let us not just be hearers of the Word, but doers also." Jesus, and then James, told us it is not enough to hear the Word, but to respond to it, for it is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword, dividing between joints and marrow, between the thoughts and intentions of the heart. The Word became flesh, we are either responding to or ignoring a person, Jesus himself! That is part of my hope in writing these emails, that having heard the teaching of God's Word we would have the opportunity to respond to it further in our lives. I personally was reminded this week of the need to step away and allow the Holy Spirit to confirm the promises that God has given to me personally and to all his children. I pray you are taken deeper in the Word this week to know Jesus Christ and make him known!

Home Enjoyment
Read through 1 Samuel 20.
I took the four sections in this chapter and related them all to the covenant Jonathan made with David. We'll study it from that perspective.
1-11 - Is the covenant still good? 12-23 - The covenant is renewed and deepened. 24-34 - The cost of the covenant. 35-42 - The peace of the covenant.

Why was David doubting the covenant with Jonathan? Was he being reasonable? Was he forgetting anything?
What are some of the reasons we doubt God's covenant with us?

Jonathan took David aside to remind him of the covenant? Why do you think that was necessary?
I proposed that Jonathan stepped aside with David to remove any fear of being overheard and so the conversation would be a face to face reminder of the covenant. What are some of the ways that God has designed for us to be reminded of the covenant he made with us? Why do you think it is necessary? (Read Hebrews 10:24-25).
What does it look like for you to take time and remember God's covenant to you? What part does God play in that?

What made the cost of rejection and being put in danger worth it to Jonathan?
David had been put in danger for being faithful in being the anointed one, Jonathan would experience the same. How is this similar to what we see in John 15:18-21?
What comfort does Jesus offer in John 16:33?
What are some ways we encounter personal costs for being committed to the covenant Jesus has made with us?

Read Philippians 4:4-9. How do these challenges from Paul reflect our participation in the covenant and the peace it brings? Is peace the fruit of works or faith?

My prayer is for us to understand that God is the author and sustainer of our faith, that which believes and acts accordingly for his glory and our good!
