Week of 10/19/25 and Potlunch
Dear Church Family,
Thank you for loving one another! There is a continual need for us to grow in loving one another, just as Jesus said, 'Even as I have loved you' and 'this is how the world will know you are my disciples'. I am thankful for what I see and know that the need to seek out others and encourage them in walking with Jesus daily in the Word and prayer is constant. Keep up the good work! Grow in the good work! Let me or another elder know if there is any way we can give resources or help you in encouraging one another towards Jesus!
Home Enjoyment
Once again, there is a lot here for one life group meeting, but do what you can and come back to these questions in your personal time.
Read 1 John 2:15-17.
How is the 'love of the world' described here by John different from 'for God so loved the world'?
As you take an assessment of yourself in verse 16 what are some questions you would like to ask?
Looking at the three statements, let's take a little assessment.
Desires of the flesh (I just want to feel good)
What good things did God make that I enjoy? Take some time to make a list.
Do I enjoy them as God designed them to be enjoyed and in the way he commanded I enjoy them? Do I see him as the source and director of my enjoying what is good?
How is it that good things that God made can lead us astray from God? Read James 1:13-17 and Romans 1:21-25.
How do you need to rethink the 'good things' in your life in view of God as the 'giver of all good things'?
Desires of the eyes (I want what they have)
What is the source of most of your envy? Is it inside of you or outside?
Perhaps there are some outside sources that spur on your envy, what are they?
What are some things lately that you have thought, 'I would be happy if I just had...'?
What is flawed about that kind of thinking?
What do you need to rethink about the source of your happiness, fulfillment, and purpose in life?
(Extra credit look up Giotta di Bondone's “Charity and Envy” and consider the characters, what is their view?)
Pride of Possessions (Look what I have done)
What are your accomplishments? What are your talents? Make a list.
Have you acknowledged God's part in each of these? If not, take some time to do so.
If needed, go back and read Daniel 4 for some perspective.
What about a lack of accomplishments or life you feel you have wasted, what does God have to offer us when we consider those?
How do you need to rethink your accomplishments in order for you to know the joy of God working in you and giving him the glory?
John's challenge comes in light of the reality that all of this world is affected by sin and is passing away, but God has given us a connection with the only thing that does last forever!
Read John 6:40. Meditate on that verse and what is not from the Father vs what the Father has given you.
Potlunch this coming Sunday - Please bring a dish with enough to share!
Brothers and Sisters, please continue to ask the Lord who he would lead you to make meaningful connections with this next week at church or at home.
In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
