Week of 7/13/25

Dear Church Family,
As we see the Lord gather together more folks from our community I want to encourage you, whether new or old, to continue taking personal responsibility to reach out to one another. Take initiative to show hospitality and to ask the questions that would lead to greater understanding of each other and the God we gather to worship and know.
Take seriously the promise that "You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13).
Praise God for the opportunity we have to gather and learn from God's Word and grow in the love of Jesus Christ!

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 Samuel 27
Are you surprised that David went from faith(ch 26) to despair so quickly? Why?
What are the things that David is telling himself about his situation and about God?
Where does that lead him to put his trust?
Where have you found yourself doing something similar?

The Bible doesn't shy away from the plural marriages of the patriarchs in a descriptive tone. It is good to remember the source of the biblical mandate to marriage. Read Genesis 1:27 and 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6, and Ephesians 5:25-33.
Is there any cultural reason given to understand this picture of marriage differently?
What motivates us to capitulate to a looser interpretation of what God has said?
How does one return to God's design when we've messed it up?

David in his raids was in some ways following out what God had said in Leviticus 18:1-5, 24-30. We aren't given enough information to know all of David's motivations, but it is possible he was fulfilling the role God had given him.
It is hard for us to fathom, but what else do we know about God's timing and justice that gives us perspective? Read 2 Peter 3:8-9, Revelation 20:11-13

This passage is complicated because we can't see all the ins and outs of David's heart in what was done because of what God said and what was done in deception and for self-preservation.
Do you have any messy times of life that still confuse you when you look back at your motivation and the things that happened? Have you repented of your part?
You may still experience consequences that you have to live with, but take Paul's words to heart in 1 Timothy 1:12-17.

Please pray for VBS as it continues this week, that our children would grow in knowing the love of God for them and respond to him freely!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
