Week of 1/25/26

Dear Church Family,
Thank you to those who stayed for the annual meeting, I know it helps build accountability and a sense of understanding about our finances and other matters in caring for our congregation. If any of you have any questions, find someone who was there or come talk with one of the elders. Our finances were in the black this year because of God's faithful and generous provision through all of you and the care that our staff and members of the Body take to steward those resources.
At the end of the day, the year, time as we know it, we are looking simply to be faithful in using our lives and resources to point each other and the world to Jesus - to know Him and make Him known.

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 John 5:13-17.
What helps you to know that something is true? Do you remember any of the proofs John has given in this letter for his claim ('I write these things to you')?
What causes you to have confidence in someone over time?
What are some ways confidence in God's character lead us to ask for things according to his will?

How does Romans 8:32 help you understand where the confidence comes from?
When Paul says all things, what kinds of things do you think he means?
Read Matthew 7:7-11
How does this help you understand why God is not making a wholesale offering to ask for whatever we want(our own will)?
What is he wanting to give us?

If we are asking for God's will we are asking for more of Him and His way.
Are John 6:40 and 1 Thessalonians 4:2-4 complimentary or contradictory regarding God's will?

What are some of the ways God would invite you to pray for sanctification?
How is confession part of praying for God's will?

Turning attention to verses 16-17.
How is praying for a brother or sister who is sinning part of God's clear will?
What encouragement are we offered in such prayers?
(Extra - How does this connect with James 5:13-20?)
Understanding the 'sin that leads to death' is either/both a specific moment of divine judgement (Ananias and Saphira) or rejecting the way of Jesus through unrepentance (blaspheming the Holy Spirit), how does this connect with praying for God's will and not ours?

Extra Credit
How many similar themes/elements can you identify about what it looks like to pray God's will between Jesus' prayer in Matthew 6:9-13, James 4:1-8, and what you have seen John communicate in this letter?

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
