Week of 9/22/24 and Potlunch/Jam Session

Dear Church Family,
Something I wanted to share... I was encouraged by verse 15 in Psalm 116 this week and then as I read the rest of the psalm in context I saw how much it reminded me of Hannah and Elkanah and what we are seeing in 1 Samuel 1.

14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all His people.
15 Precious in the sight of the Lord
is the death of His saints.
16 O Lord, I am Your servant;
I am Your servant, the son of Your maidservant.
    You have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving
and call on the name of the Lord.

May we fulfill our vows/promises and offer thanksgiving, even when feels like a sacrifice, as a response to the One who gave us life and salvation. He has 'loosed' our bonds from sin and death, hallelujah! I would encourage you to read the rest of the Psalm when you get a moment!

Home Enjoyment
Read 1 Samuel 1:19-28.
What clues in the text would point to the genuineness of Elkanah's worship and visits to the temple?
What do Jesus and the Apostles say shows our worship as genuine?
Some examples if you have trouble... John 4:24, John 13:35, Romans 12:1-2, James 1:27, Hebrews 12:28-29
Extra Credit: Some Psalms that also talk about a heart of worship Psalm 63:1-4, 42:1-5.

What are Hannah's responses to the Lord's gift of Samuel throughout this passage?
Read Romans 11:36, does that seem to fit Hannah's responses?

In Vs 23 Elkanah encourages Hannah to keep her vow and thus allow the Lord to establish His Word. Have you ever made a vow or promise to the Lord that was hard to keep? What has sustained you?

How is the Lord 'establishing His Word' today? What promises has He made that you need to remind yourself of today(Personal and Historical)? What things in your life make you tend to forget His promises or commands?

Take a moment to remind yourself that if you are in Christ you are not only 'lent' to the Lord, but belong to him. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Announcements - I forgot to mention!!!
Potlunch this coming Sunday (9/29)! Please bring a dish for every two people in your family and enough to share! We always need volunteers to help. Talk to Lesley Clark or Kathryn Cowley if you'd like to help.

After the potlunch there will be a worship 'jam session' in Hebrews. Singers and musicians who would like to come and play/sing together are welcome! Music provided.

I am so thankful for what the Lord is doing as we gather together seeking the Lord. May we hunger and thirst for Him, so that He may satisfy us with Himself!

In Christ,
Pastor Phillip
